"Unveiling Electric Grace: A Transformative Blend of Historical & Modern Motifs"

Electric Grace - A Moesus Sanchez Creation

Drawing inspiration from my adolescent years, I have two sources to pay homage to. I'll do them in order. My first field trip at Lolly Pop Lane Elementary School was to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Walking through the door, I was mesmerized by the African Art Exhibition. There, I felt an instant connection to the African masks and figurines. Years later, I started displaying behaviors that would categorize me as an artist. I was doodling all over my notebooks, journals, and class assignments (Lol).

I was about eight years old and, at this time, was fascinated with cartoons. Mom and Dad placed me in a Super Saturday Arts Program located at City College High School. There, I met my mentor and lifelong friend, Larry Ponch Brown. Walking into his art studio, I was overwhelmed once again by the modern, cool versions of African masks throughout his body of work. Here is the source of the inspiration. Weekly, I visited his studio, and he began to teach me how to refine my art skills. I began to adapt and emulate his style. Masks have been a theme throughout my life, and now I celebrate them throughout my artistic expression.

Creating "Electric Grace" was a journey of exploration and discovery. Using Adobe Fresco, I began with a simple sketch, allowing the lines to flow naturally and intuitively. As the piece evolved, I experimented with different techniques and color palettes, ultimately finding the perfect combination that brought the vision to life. The result is a piece that feels both timeless and contemporary, a true reflection of the beauty that can be found in simplicity.

"Electric Grace" is a harmonious blend of historical and modern motifs. The bold, vibrant background juxtaposed with the monochromatic black and white depiction of the African mask creates a striking visual contrast that draws the viewer in. The use of Adinkra symbols adds a layer of cultural depth and significance to the piece. These symbols, originating from the Akan people of Ghana, are rich in meaning and convey messages of wisdom, strength, and resilience.

Specifically, The Adinkra symbol used in this digital creation is called Duafe it represents beauty, cleanliness, and feminine qualities. #SelfCare, it's often associated with the virtues of good hygiene, grooming, and the care and nurturing of oneself and others. The symbol is depicted as a wooden comb, which is traditionally used by women in Ghana to style their hair.

The vibrant background serves as a dynamic canvas that highlights the intricate details of the mask. The contrast between the bright colors and the dark mask creates a sense of balance and harmony, making the piece visually captivating. To spice up the Pop Culture infusion this Mask is adorned with the Adinkra symbol "Duafe" as hear rings adding a touch of tradition and history to the modern aesthetic.
